What is 360 Degree Feedback / 360 Appraisal?

360 degree feedback, also known as 360 appraisal / 360 review, is effectively a mechanism for soliciting formal feedback from a group of people, to another person.

The 360 feedback (360 appraisal) initiative is used as a development tool in the following areas:

  • 'Training Needs' analysis

    • Subsequent developmental activity can be targeted at the individual(s) who need it. This clearly makes the developmental activity more effective, as well as saving money.

    • If the 360 feedback initiative is re run, for example 12 months later, this can show how effective the development activity has been in improving the individual over time.

    • As the name 360 appraisal suggests it is effectively an appraisal of behavioural performance and many organisations use them either instead of or to compliment a more traditional appraisal process.

    • 360 degree feedback helps in determining a firm's succession plan opportunities, and assessing how rich their bank of people may be for promotion.

  • Skills gaps

    • Poor or sub standard performance can often be hard to manage so 360 appraisal feedback helps to encourage the person to acknowledge their performance and mindset or skills gaps and take further accountability for their performance.

The 360 degree feedback is all electronically collected via our web based server system.

Delegates require:

  • An email address
  • Access to a PC to use the system

Feedback is anonymously given. The client can have two levels of anonymity as follows:

    • Self Nomination: (Our preferred and recommended option)
      • The feedback recipient (delegate) nominates the people they want to receive feedback from.
      • Honesty and open mindedness is required to ensure delegates don't just pick people who they know will give them a good read out.
      • The feedback is anonymous; they will not know who scored them, or who said which comments.

    • Central Nomination:
      • A central person nominates who will provide feedback for each of the delegates
      • Those receiving feedback are not aware of who provides the feedback. 
      • We don't recommend this option as it is closed and does not promote an open and honest culture where feedback is accepted and embraced.
  • Standard or Bespoke Packages

    • You can choose from one of our standard 360 feedback packages or invest a little more and bespoke your own package.
    • Clients who already have a system in place might want to go for the bespoke option to ensure that the 360 appraisal questionnaires and reports match their existing framework.

  • Standard 360 degree feedback package:

    • A questionnaire which asks for 30 numerical answers focusing across six standard competencies on a scale of 0% to 100%, based on how frequently the behaviour is observed:
        • Communication
        • Team working
        • Results orientation
        • Leadership
        • Coaching and developing
        • Managing people performance
    • Opportunities arise for providers to type in freeform text comments throughout the questionnaire

  • Included in the 360 degree feedback package...

    • A sample briefing letter
      • To send out internally to both delegates and potential feedback nominees

    • Loading of the nominated people onto our system
      • This triggers an email link to be sent to the nominated feedback recipients (the delegates)

    • A full colour in depth personal 360 feedback report
      • For each participating delegate; this includes group benchmarking data to allow each delegate to compare their own performance with that of the average of all other delegates.

    • A two page document
      • Which assists delegates to interpret their report and be clear on what they should be looking for.

    • Reports
      • 360 degree delegate reports are issued once all nominated feedback providers have completed their questionnaires. 
      • Reminder emails are sent out to those who have not completed them by the required deadline.
      • The reports contain group benchmarking data for one or more groups of people 
      • This allows delegates to assess how strong their own performance is deemed to be in any one area against a group average of their colleagues.

Can we use our own competencies?
Customers have a choice of the standard PDW competency questionnaire or you devise a bespoke questionnaire based on your own competencies at no extra charge.

How much administration is involved?
Once the 360 feedback questionnaire is agreed and loaded we just need the names and emails of the delegates and their nominated feedback providers to add to the system.  The briefing, questionnaires and reports are all managed on line.

How do we manage levels of completion?
Once we have agreed set deadlines for completion PDW will monitor levels of completion and send out reminders at appropriate intervals.

Is your 360 feedback system confidential?
All feedback providers are placed in nominated categories of line manager, direct report, peer and other respondent, so as long as there is more than one respondent in each category full confidentiality can be maintained.

How do I receive my report?
Once all feedback is received our system will produce an individual 360 appraisal report for all delegates, which contains their total ratings, their average rating and an average rating against the rest of the group.

How long does the 360 degree feedback questionnaire take to complete?
Our system has been designed so that rather than having to complete numerous questionnaires for a number of delegates, the nominated providers simply have to complete one questionnaire where they can rank all delegates against each question. This means each nominated provider should only need about 15 minutes to complete their questionnaire, even if they have been nominated by several delegates.

What support do we receive?
Each customer is allocated a PDW Account Manager who is in place to manage all enquiries and issues that may arise in the process.
